A Letter to the Editor....
I write on behalf of the Zonta Club of Bendigo who have been working in the Bendigo community for over 40 years to build a better world for women and girls. Zonta’s vision for gender equality is not yet a reality. Around the world, women and girls are facing increased challenges as a result of COVID-19, climate change and threats to their human rights. To respond to these challenges, we need a strong, committed community of individuals working together at the local and global levels to fight for gender equity.
Zonta members believe that it is time for our political system to take women’s issues far more seriously and for politicians and in particular those candidates standing in the forthcoming state election to have a greater understanding of the issues that affect women which are:
Improving affordable housing, especially for women over 55 years at risk of becoming homeless;
Improving the opportunity for women to return to work. Specifically, boosting participation and funding for traditionally female-based careers such as childcare, aged care and nursing;
Equity for women as customers within the banking system;
Reducing our emissions rate;
Addressing the issue of violence against women as it is a sad fact that one woman is killed a week due to family violence.
